Would a career in graphic design be good financially?

Would a career in graphic design be good financially?

Graphic Design is a field that, if you are talented, innovative and are dedicated to your craft, can possibly be financially rewarding.

Most successful graphic designers are very good at a number of tasks, like presenting ideas, demonstrating value, and having equal parts of a quality visual aesthetic style and strong business acumen. The secret is the best money is made in running a successful business, not in doing design work.

Be sure you know that going in.

That being said by the time you leave college, the field of graphic design may be very different than the one that exists today, given current business trends and advances in technology.

I am not saying that you as a graphic designer could be replaced by a robot, but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

Advances in software may allow anyone with basic computer skills and no graphic training to do credible graphic design at their desktop.

Oh wait.

That has already happened. It was called Desktop Publishing and it happened during the 1980s and 1990s. And this old designer lived through it. With these advances, examples of really, really bad graphic design are proliferating our world, because people do not understand the basic principles of quality design, and these new digital tools oftentimes cannot and do not include them.

Today everyone carries in their pocket a digital camera containing the basic knowledge of the world’s greatest photographers in the software. This digital and video camera also happens to be called a phone. Who needs a photographer or expensive equipment? We are living through this time as I write these words.

Unfortunately, This proliferation of design software has driven up the DIY design industry and driven down the demand for professional designers for hire and lowered the price that can be charged for design work.

So you always need to be ready for change.

Come to think of it, this advice works for anyone thinking about any career.
